All of our gardens have been started using the no-till lasagna gardening method of layering cardboard, compost, and mulch directly on top of grass.
Hilltop Garden: A dry spot with deer exposure, this is our spot for growing things such as rosemary, sage, lavender, echinacea, onions and garlic.
Perennial Blueberry and Asparagus Patches: These perennials need time to mature but should then provide harvests for many years. A Pierce Conservation District-funded pollinator hedgerow is nearby.
Pollinator Garden: This NWF-certified Wildlife Habitat includes native and non-native flowers, shrubs, and trees, nesting habitat such as intentional piles of sticks, a snag (dead tree), and water sources--simple bird baths with stones in them to prevent bees from drowning.
Pasture-Orchard: Inside of the Sniffspot, permaculture "food forest guilds" have inspired our planting of fruit trees and other useful plants. An NRCS/USDA-funded pollinator hedgerow borders one end.
U-pick garden: located within the Sniffspot (so only accessible to Sniffspot guests for now). By locating the planters along the inside of this garden's fence, we have been able to discourage deer from jumping the fence to feast on our flowers and produce.
